The religious right's alliance with the GOP is absurd in the sense that it appears that in practice nobody quite hates god's children as much as the religious right as far as the politicians they support goes. I'm fairly sure Jesus wouldn't go for that, but his followers seem to with gusto.
It's a wonder that they don't find a use for all that food on the domestic front. Hunger is a problem in the US, too. But I guess under this administration everyone needs to pull themselves up by their own jock straps.
If you ignore the incompetence that lead to this situation in the first place, it’s likely that the expiration date on the food items is sooner than they could reasonably ship it to the US and distribute it.
I also question whether Americans would eat it. Just speaking anecdotally from my volunteer experience, while the poor or hungry in the US appreciate a free meal, they still want things that are familiar and palatable. Dumping 800 tons of dry emergency biscuits on food banks would likely result in expiration and a ton of waste anyway. Not to mention the storage and handling requirements (dry environment, no direct sunlight.)

Aside from the absurd tragedy of it all, the US is throwing away its soft power.
